AI and the Future of Work in London: What the 2026 Evidence Suggests

London is more exposed to generative AI than other UK regions because of its knowledge-intensive economy. Here is what that means for workers, employers and policymakers.

London's workforce is unusually exposed to generative artificial intelligence because the city specialises in knowledge-intensive work.

London City Hall's April 2026 analysis found that the capital is more exposed to generative AI than any other UK region. That does not mean London will automatically lose the most jobs. Exposure measures how much of current work contains tasks that AI may be able to change.

Knowledge work is where generative AI is strongest

Large language models are particularly capable at tasks involving text, analysis, summarisation, coding, information retrieval and document production.

London has large concentrations of professional services, finance, technology, media, law and other occupations where those activities are common.

Jobs are bundles of tasks

The distinction between a job and a task is essential.

A lawyer may use AI to review documents but still need judgement, client communication and accountability. A software engineer may automate routine coding while spending more time on architecture and evaluation.

AI can therefore transform a job without eliminating it.

The biggest risk is uneven adaptation

Organisations that redesign workflows effectively may become more productive. Workers who gain AI fluency may become more valuable.

Others may struggle if training, access and organisational support are weak.

This creates a distribution question: who receives the tools and opportunities needed to benefit from the transition?

Employers need to redesign work deliberately

Simply buying AI licences rarely creates sustained productivity improvement.

Companies need to identify workflows, define quality standards, train employees and redesign responsibilities around what AI can and cannot do reliably.

Entry-level work requires particular attention

Some junior professional tasks are attractive automation targets because they involve research, drafting, data processing or repetitive analysis.

But those tasks also help people learn industries and develop judgement.

Employers need to consider how future employees will gain experience if the traditional learning tasks disappear.

London is responding at city level

The London AI and Jobs Taskforce published recommendations in July 2026 focused on acting early, shaping change and creating opportunity.

That framing is useful because the labour-market outcome is not predetermined by technical capability alone. Training, employer behaviour and policy influence how technology is adopted.

Opportunity will grow alongside disruption

AI also creates new roles in engineering, governance, implementation, security, evaluation and transformation.

London's ability to benefit from AI will depend partly on whether workers can move into those emerging areas.

The future of work in London is therefore unlikely to be a simple story of jobs disappearing. It is more likely to involve widespread task change, new occupations and pressure on organisations to redesign how people and AI work together.
