The world's largest AI conferences can feel less like conferences and more like temporary cities.
Thousands of attendees, hundreds of exhibitors and multiple stages create enormous discovery potential. Scale is useful. It is also easy to mistake for quality.
What scale does well
Large events aggregate markets.
Attendees can discover technologies they did not know to search for. Vendors can reach many sectors. International participants can justify travel because the programme contains enough possibilities to make the trip worthwhile.
What scale does badly
Serendipity can become noise.
Meeting a specific person is harder. Popular sessions fill. Exhibition floors can overwhelm. Senior attendees may retreat into private formats.
The organiser's networking design therefore becomes more important as attendance grows.
Attendance needs definition
Ask whether numbers describe unique in-person attendees, registrations, visits across several days or virtual participants.
Those are all legitimate metrics when labelled correctly.
They should not be combined casually.
Exhibition scale is its own product
Large expos are excellent for market scanning.
Buyers can compare suppliers quickly. Vendors can monitor competitors. Startups can test positioning.
The value is strongest when exhibitors are organised logically and the audience includes real buyers.
International reach matters
A large domestic event and a global event solve different problems.
Companies seeking cross-border partners should examine country distribution rather than assuming internationality from size.
Smaller events remain important
A 10,000-person conference can be less useful than a 500-person specialist meeting when the objective is deep peer exchange.
The correct portfolio often contains both.
Women in AI Global Summit's planned scale
The 2027 Women in AI Global Summit is being built for 7,500 in-person attendees and 75,000 virtual participants in London.
That places substantial responsibility on the event design. Scale only becomes useful when attendees can navigate it through tracks, workshops, networking environments and specialist communities.
That is the principle we will use as the event grows.
The biggest AI conference is not automatically the best AI conference.
Scale is a capability. Organisers and attendees still have to convert it into value.
